Today, you give the advice

When Carolyn Hax goes on vacation, she often lets her readers give the advice. So that's what I'm going to do today.

I can see at least 5 distinct suggestions I would make for Rep. Kathy Castor:

You've been reading this blog for a while now, right? What suggestions would you make about her outfit?

    1. Put on lipstick.

    2. Too bright of a yellow color . . . or too much of the color.

    3. Bad neckline. She would do better to have a scoop neck or v-neck or something other than the turtle neck.

    4. The white stripe across her waist and elbows cuts her into halves in an odd-looking way way.

    5. ???

  2. I agree with politician in training. But I can think of more than 5!

    In addition to PIT's observations:

    1) The sweater set (?) seems overly casual to me; sportswear in the literal sense of the word. I feel like it's channeling athletic gear.

    2) Is that a thin, long gold necklace I spy? I'm not sure because it gets lost.

    3) Is that a lapel pin floating out on her shoulder or is that part of the top?

    4) The hair's a little '90s soccer mom.

She looked strong, intelligent and feminine in this outfit she wore for a speech to honor Essie Mae Reed - she should wear more like this! http://tinyurl.com/244vf2z

  3. I must agree with Mel's concise statement..beyond fixing hair and makeup I don't know how on earth she could save that jacket/shirt combo. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they are, in fact, one item of clothing (a la my shirts with sewn on vests from the early '90s).

But I guess I should be more constructive...

    1. Put on lipstick

    2. Take of the white-ish eyeshadow

    3. Ditch the long gold chain for something shorter and chunkier

    4. Choose a jacket that's just one color

    5. Lower neckline on the shirt

  4. I think I've learned a few things>>

1.The jacket is matronly looking and out dated

    2. The two tone jacket cuts off her top third

    3. The white band cuts her again

    4. The pin is too small

    5. She needs more makeup

    Did I get them all?

  5. I'd rank the lack of visible lipstick #1, but I also wonder from the big opening shot whether she has the dreaded white stockings on.

Other than that I agree with the other commentors and think that yellow casts an unflattering tone onto her face.
